Tripartite Group opposed to immigration mafia in Libya

Abidjan, ANGOLA, December 1 - A working group to tackle mass immigration through the Mediterranean Sea and fight the immigration mafia in Libya was created in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, by the African Union (A.U), European Union and the United Nations. ,

On a communiqué after the meeting, in which Angola was represented by its Head of State, João Lourenço, it was informed that the working group will focus on protecting the lives of immigrants and refugees.

 

Attending the gathering in Abidjan, the Angolan ambassador to Belgium, Elizabeth Simbrão, said to the Angolan National Radio (RNA) that the African Union Summit, which happened in Côte d 'Ivoire, reinforced the partnership idea between the two blocks (African Union /European Union).  

 

Africa and Europe decided to strengthen the joint efforts to face the common challenges, threats and security matters.

 

On his turn, the President of Congo, Denis Sassou Nguesso, said to RNA that illegal immigration has been enticing too many African youths, specially from the Sahel region”.

 

He stressed that the illegal immigration phenomenon is a challenge that is parallel to the climate change and economic development issues.

 

The summit, which ended last Thursday afternoon, was attended by about 80 heads of State and Government, other five thousand participants from 55 African states and 28 European countries.  

 

The meeting was also attended by representatives from the United Nations (U.N) and international organisations.

 

On the fringes of the summit, the Angolan President, João Lourenço, held separate meetings with the U.N Secretary-General, António Guterres, and the president of the European Parliament, António Tajani.

 

In Abidjan, President João Lourenço also had separate meetings with the prime ministers of São Tomé and Príncipe, Patrice Trovoada, and Portugal António Costa.
